What does Mark Twains Quote : "the secret source of humor is not joy but sorrow." Mean?

My english cl is reading the short story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and one of the questions refers to this quote. I'm having trouble deciefering it please help? I'm trying to figure out how "sorrow and humor go hand in hand"
